Dear Dr. Bell,
I read that taking 2,000 IUs of Vitamin D/day would help me lose weight. It didn’t work for me. Do you have any idea why people are raving about Vitamin D for fat loss?
Yes! You should be taking at least 2,000 IU/day of Vitamin D-3. The other forms of Vitamin D are far less effective. The 2,000 IU recommendation is the maximum amount the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends without close medical follow-up, due to possibility of toxicity from Vitamin D in high doses.
That being said, many doctors prescribe 50,000 IUs! Why so high? Because the more fat cells you have on your body, the more Vitamin D gets absorbed into your fat cells. Your fat loss goals will not begin to work until your fat cells are saturated with Vitamin D and your blood levels begin to rise to at least 32 mg/ml. It is at this level of blood saturation, that you will begin to lose fat. This means that overweight women will typically need twice as much as thinner women.
Studies have linked Vitamin D with insulin resistance, Metabolic Syndrome and Type 2 Diabetes. When Vitamin D levels are restored, insulin resistance improves. This is because it is the major factor in fat production. Vitamin D has a healthy effect on insulin and other fat regulating hormones. This turns the fat making process OFF, and turns the fat burning process ON!
It is highly recommended that you get a doctor’s supervision of your Vitamin D levels, because as you burn your fat, the fat will release more and more Vitamin D into your blood stream. Initially, this is very good thing, since more Vitamin D means more fat burning, but eventually you could burn so much fat that you could reach toxic levels. Your doctor can monitor you to make sure you maintain healthy levels.
Another benefit of Vitamin D-3 supplementation is the healthy “Side-Effects.” Besides helping you lose weight and burn fat, numerous studies have shown Vitamin D-3 supplementations to greatly reduce your risk of developing high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, joint pain, osteoporosis, respiratory infections, and more!
