Personal Fitness Trainer, Advanced Flexibility Coach, Sports Nutrition Specialist & Advanced Functional Trainer

When & why did you become a trainer?

I’ve been a Personal Trainer for 11 years. After having my last child I decided to take the nutritional practices I was using on my children and use them on myself to pursue something new, “bodybuilding.” I spent 6 years competing, and the more I learned about nutrition and strength training, the more I realized how little I knew. It was then that I decided to pursue a career helping others overcome emotional and physical barriers for their health and wellbeing. I am especially excited about teaching my clients proper nutrition and helping them overcome habits that destroy their health and self image.

My husband and I own a health club here in my small town of Sweet Home, Oregon. He manages the club and I am the trainer and health coach. We have continued to be an active, positive presence in our community for 7 years.

What made you choose IFPA?

I looked at several different options to get certified, but chose IFPA because of the accreditations it carried and the fact that I could study and take the tests at home, and still be with my children.

What is your training style & what methods do you use?

I prefer to work with groups. The energy from the group is motivating and is so much fun! I prefer to train my clients using a combination of functional exercises and isolation movements (like a cherry on top). Functional training is more fun, beneficial for a well rounded fitness level and is a great way to get your cardio in at the same time. I do, however, train individuals for bodybuilding from time to time, which includes more traditional lifting moves.

How do you keep your clients motivated?

I treat my clients as friends and talk with them about the big picture. “What do you envision for your near future? Extended future? Old age?” The key is bringing them back to that picture when they get off track. My job is to show them how to get there.

We all wake up each day and make a choice to invest in our today and tomorrow. What will you and I choose?

Testimony of Vicki:

I joined Steelhead Strength and Fitness in January, 2013 because I always had the goal of becoming physically fit and healthy, and this was the beginning. After I got out of high school, my fitness level went downhill. I finally realized that I was not the person I wanted to be physically and I needed to change soon before it got worse. I no longer felt comfortable in my own skin. My first step was to meet Vicki Bauer, one of the trainers at Steelhead. I wasn’t sure what I was in for after that because she seemed to know just about everything you could know about nutrition and fitness training.

As a beginner at Steelhead, I did not know much about when to workout, how many times a week, what workouts to do, what I should be eating, and so on, to reach the goals I had set for myself Vicki took me under her wing and gave me the directions I needed. She told me it was going to be hard work, but I felt she saw the determination in me. Vicki taught me everything you could know about nutrition. She required me to fill out a food log everyday and to turn it in to her every two weeks at our meetings. She showed me what I should be eating and when I should be eating it. I never realized how complicated it was to find the right food without there being something artificial or processed in it. Vicki also encouraged me into taking some workout classes so I joined the LBCC fitness class, the Steelhead’s HIIT class and later on I started going to spin class. I had had a hard time coming to the gym on my own, so the best way for me was to join some classes.

I worked as hard as I could in the workout classes and tried my best to eat healthy with Vicki’s guidance. One of the best things that kept me motivated was how Vicki would tell me she was so proud of me and what a great job I was doing. That really made me strive to do my best to accomplish my goals. I could not ask for a better instructor. Vicki also allowed me to give her a call if I ever had a question about anything.

I had a great experience reaching my goals. I started losing weight and body fat which really kept me feeling positive. I felt confident that I was going to succeed because Vicki made sure that I was following her guidelines by working out as hard as I could and eating healthy without having to need artificial sugars. Another quality I enjoyed about Vicki is she always believes that all natural food is best. This made me feel great that I was able to lose the weight the natural way.

I started at 140 pounds and after five months of hard work and determination. I accomplished my goal and now I currently weigh 117 pounds. I lost l3% body fat and 6 inches from my waist and hips. Another goal I achieved was to build muscle, and I am so much stronger than I have ever been before. I feel so much more comfortable in my skin, and being a woman that’s only 5ft 2in. tall, since I have muscle I also feel more confident being on my own, able to defend myself. I finally feel like that real me inside has finally came out because now I have so much more energy for the day and I want to go out and be active. I can do more activities without having to worry about not being strong enough or too tired. I now have the strength from working out and I have the energy from eating the right foods, being active whenever I can. Vicki has helped turned me into the person I have always wanted to be!

I have learned so much after this experience with Vicki. I now have skills on what to look for under the ingredients in the food I eat and how important it is to eat all natural foods instead of foods with artificial ingredients. I also learned that it is very important to have plenty of protein in your diet along with eating everything 2-4 hours so your metabolism stays high and you continue to burn calories. You can also burn more calories if you do interval training and work out your muscles, than if you just go for a jog or a bike ride. There are many more things I have learned and I am going to use them from now on, to be fit, healthy and live a long enjoyable life. I believe that you can accomplish anything if you are determined, and you have people like Vicki, to support you every step of the way.
