How Does the VA Reimbursement Process Work?

Military members that are eligible for GI BILL benefits, must first purchase and pass a certification exam. A letter of passing and an official IFPA Certificate will then be provided to you. This documentation of grade, along with additional required forms (see below) must be sent to the VA to receive reimbursement. 

The VA can also reimburse you for retest fees.

Options:

• If you are a Veteran or Active Duty you will need to fill out Form 22-1990
• If you are an eligible child or spouse, you need to fill out Form 22-5490

You must submit a receipt of purchase along with documentation of your grade.

• Finally, you must either submit Form 22-0803.

To sum up:

• Form 22-1990 or Form 22-5490 
• Receipt of Purchase
• Documentation of your Grade
• Form 22-0803

You will then compile all this information and send it into your regional office. The VA has two Regional Processing Offices that handle GI BILL claims. Submit your documentation to the Regional Processing Office in your jurisdiction. You can also create an account and upload your completed application through Ask VA.
